CAFE SERIES (2009-2007)
In this series I painted scenarios from the unguarded moments of café customers. While public gathering places provide a wealth of visual material to any artist, my particular fascination lies in how the culture of the space creates a free zone of socially-supported anonymity. Whether we’re alone or with a friend, there’s a sense that we’re inhabiting a kind of shared performance space where a pleasant cuppa eases the obligations of the day, and all around us are the parallel lives of people who have randomly come together in a chorus of support.
