TREE WORKS ON PAPER (2018-2009)

The Last Tree Series is a body of work that aligns with ideas expressed in Jared Diamond’s 2005 book, “Collapse.” In his discussion of avoidable past climate catastrophes, Professor Diamond speculates that over time the massive cutting down of trees on Easter Island in order to erect giant stone head sculptures ultimately led to environmental devastation. I’m pursuing a pictorial landscape model that can represent the cherishing of what exists while at the same time warning of potential loss. Our arboreal giants have agency up to a point, but hostile or deficient environments can defeat their potent leafy promise.
